OUR PHILOSOPHY
At Prairiewood Saunas, we value each opportunity to create soulful spaces that enrich our clients' lifestyles and well-being — spaces where people can unwind, connect, and appreciate the beauty of the world around them.

// WHAT TO EXPECT
Whether you have a clear vision in mind or you're completely new to the world of sauna, we’re here to work with you. We provide guidance and personalized solutions to craft something you'll love.

// DESIGN
Our design philosophy blends a curiosity for new ideas and the proven performance of time-tested techniques. We’re always learning, experimenting, and refining to ensure each sauna is as functional as it is unique.

// MATERIALS
Nearly all of the wood we use is locally sourced from within a two-county area in central Wisconsin, reflecting our deep connection to the land. For founder Ben Gruetzmacher, this connection is personal. Many of his early saunas were built using wood harvested from his own family’s forest.

YOUR BUILDER
// ABOUT
Ben Gruetzmacher grew up surrounded by builders — his father a carpenter, his grandfather a farmer and craftsman. From a young age, Ben learned to appreciate the smell of fresh-cut wood and the satisfaction of creating something by hand.

Taking on a variety of work throughout his life, it wasn't until Ben tackled a number of personal projects like his family’s cottage and shed, where he discovered his passion for smaller, more intentional builds. Saunas allowed him to focus on creativity, craftsmanship, and creating unique spaces with thoughtful details.

// WHY SAUNA?
Ben’s passion for saunas lies in the deeper experience they offer—combining health benefits, a connection to nature, and a space to unwind and appreciate the company of others.

PRAIRIEWOOD
// THE PRAIRIE
Ben has cultivated a thriving five-acre prairie that reflects his deep appreciation for open spaces and natural beauty. Inspired by places like Jerry Apps' cabin in central Wisconsin, where decades of care shaped a vibrant natural retreat, Ben set out to transform his land into something equally meaningful.

Prairie plants offer a year-round allure, with their beauty shifting through the seasons and providing vital benefits to local wildlife, even in winter. For Ben, the prairie is more than a backdrop, it’s a space to explore, enjoy, and continually develop. This connection to nature inspires the welcoming spirit he brings to both his life and his work, ensuring that every project carries the same thoughtfulness and harmony as the land he calls home.

// OUR NAME
The name Prairiewood reflects the interaction of the prairie and surrounding woodlands. It also inspires a sense of place among nearby towns like Longwood and Greenwood.
The big bluestem, featured in the logo, is prominent in the prairie. This towering grass represents the harmony between land and life, with deep roots that nourish the soil and water. The five stems at the top are a personal touch, symbolizing Ben's family and the values that ground Prairiewood Saunas.
